Genres are a baseline used to respond and react to many situations. Genre is a way to categorize so that it is recognizable by it’s commonalities. Genres can be static, fluid or something in between. For example a passport application is static but a drama play is fluid, while it’s a drama the story line can be vastly different from other dramas. And in between genres are things like memo’s and haikus. They have a baseline to follow but the content changes.
Genre’s change is real situations based on our surroundings and the people we are surrounded by. For example, at work I talk and react in a way that aligns with my colleagues and the work we are doing, I’m professional and try to always showcase my best as there is a bit of pressure to always prove yourself. While at home I follow a different set of ‘rules’ by being more comfortable in my surroundings and interacting with my husband in a way that brings us closer together. While with friends I might react differently depending on which friends I’m hanging out with and where we are. I have friends who are into deep conversation or friends who love to joke and relax. When at a nice restraint I might be more restrained but at a bar I might loosen up a little bit more. Each of these situations has a set of guidelines around them and I adjust myself accordingly. Not to say that my personality changes but more that certain aspects of my personality come out depending on what the situation calls for.
I have to say that when we started reading about genres I was fairly lost but as each week has come to pass I feel I have a stronger grip on genres and how important they are in our lives and how they shape our reactions and responses in specific situations. I can’t think of any questions at this time although I’m sure there is much I can still learn.
Create and publish a blog post in which you try to explore what you know and understand about what genres are and how they work, and about how our use of genres in real situations for real purposes changes the genres or molds the genres to our needs, while at the same time we are bound to the rules of the genres. (Use the texts we read last week and this week to help you out.) Include in your post all the questions you still have about what genres are, how they work, and how they change with our implementation of them for various uses and purposes.
