Discourse Community – Intercommunication

The element of discourse community that I chose is; methods of communication among the members. This element outlines the ways in which a discourse community may communicate and stay in touch with one another. They use these methods to share experiences, thoughts, ideas, problems, and solutions. This results in information being transferred from one person to another. The members can then provide feedback, debate, converse and ultimately, learn from one another.

Within my workplace discourse community we use multiple methods of communication including email, conference calls, face-to-face meetings and instant messaging. We use email to relay meeting notes, request answers to questions pertaining to a specific project or system issue, share information and request meetings. We use conference calls to have meetings where we talk about major projects and discuss system and business requirements. They are also used to discuss system issues and potential solutions. We uses face-to-face meetings when a whiteboarding session is needed to map out solutions and ideas. We also use face-to-face when a more personal approach is needed, such as 1:1s.. We use Instant Messaging for quick questions or comments that don’t require an in-depth discussion or need multiple people involved. I actively use each of these methods and determine which method is best based on my personal experience with the members of the community that I need to have communication with and the topic that needs to be discussed.
