Portfolio Thinking

I understand “Portfolio Thinking” to be a way to showcase our ideas, thought processes, business savvy, skills and accomplishments. I believe it can also showcase our failures and what we did to overcome those failures. Sharp covers these ideas much more thoroughly in her article.

My own experience with portfolios is very limited. While I did create a portfolio in the Bridging course I have not created a portfolio for my career or for any other reason. Perhaps, as I reflect, I can consider LinkedIn as a sort of portfolio, as you list your skills and career history as part of your profile. Also, as I think of my Performance Management reviews, I can also consider them as a sort of portfolio since my accomplishments from the past year are documented. Perhaps we are creating informal portfolios without ever realizing it.

I think, by creating a course portfolio, we are being given practice and insight into what will be needed in a career so as to document our value to our company. As I stated above I believe Performance Management is a type of portfolio and I believe McLagen alludes to that in her article, while she goes on to say that Performance Management needs to be updated to reflect a more conversation style and less fear based it is, in essence, our portfolio in the company and should be expanded on by both us and our leaders to create a clear picture of our accomplishments and skills as well as development opportunities.

  1. I agree portfolios is a way to showcase your skills, experiences, and improvements. Portfolios can make a meeting smooth and easy if the portfolio is updated, allowing for more time for other business needs. It also, makes it a very competitive business world whether your new to a company or moving into another position within a company.
My experience with using a portfolio is very limited for me as well and how they are presented is different as well. When I was first introduced to portfolios they were created in binders and presented to employers to show your work experiences. I also had to create one from my exit interview when I received my associate’s degree in 2009. So, things have changed when I took bridging and we had to use WordPress. I plan to create a professional portfolio as well as I’m getting ready to move into my future career.
