Discourse Community

A discourse community contains a group of people who have common interests and goals and interact with each other based on those interests and goals.

In order to a be considered a discourse community a couple of things must first occur. The community or group of people need to have a common interest, such as sci-fi novels. They need to be made of a mixture of experts and novices with a limited number of members. If they don’t have a mixture of experts levels the community will eventually die out. They need to have a common language (terminologies specific to the community). They need to have means of communication. There can be multiple avenues of communication, such as text, phone, email and face-to-face. Finally they need to have common goal, in an example of a sci-fi group their goal could perhaps be to discuss and dissect sci-fi novels to uncover deeper meaning and hidden messages.

  1. Discourse groups are very cool! You learn how to communicate and the tools of communication within the community. For example, in business, you learn how to communicate through writing, email, text messaging, fax, and phone. There are certain writing styles, greetings and tone of voice to use when communicating.
